NordVPN is one of the most popular names out there. It makes some serious claims like being “the best VPN service provider in 2021”.Good marketing doesn’t always have to mean good service. That’s why we tested NordVPN and wanted to check whether words can be followed by actions.
At first glance, the Panama-based VPN seems to have all the basics. There is a massive network made up of 5390+ servers in 61 countries. There are special categories for streaming, torrenting, and extra security.
The protection is excellent thanks to the strong 256-bit encryption. It is used in combination with the very secure VPN protocols (OpenVPN and IKEv2 / IPSec). It’s all built into intuitive applications that are nice to the touch and easy to use.
Even better, NordVPN outdoes itself when it comes to streaming. It’s our first choice for streaming Netflix and BBC iPlayer. The results of our tests make it clear why this is so.In this review, we look at all of the key details that make a VPN service either great or unusable. Read on to find out if NordVPN lives up to its reputation or if it’s overrated.
Speed tests – how fast is NordVPN?
You can unblock as much as you want, but it won’t do you any good if your VPN is lame and unstable. Therefore, it is important to know what speeds you can expect from the service. For our NordVPN review, we initially measured the speed without a VPN. Here are the results:
For our first test we used the quick connect function.
It automatically takes the server that is best for us at the moment:
- The speed decreased 3.73% when downloading and 5.56% when uploading. That is hardly noticeable. The speed was close to our original speed and that’s a great result.
- After a promising start, we took the “fastest” server in the US.
This was suggested by the VPN app:
Here we had to accept considerable losses. It was 75.35% for the download and 86.27% for the upload . Since our tests were carried out from Europe, we expected such a result. But it is not really satisfactory.
Security – is NordVPN safe?
So far, NordVPN has defended its reputation for being good at streaming and torrenting. But secure and private surfing has always been the strength of the VPN.
In fact, NordVPN had an external review done by a company with a good reputation. A high level of privacy and security was confirmed. We’re not allowed to share the full report here, but NordVPN subscribers can view it through the Members Area.
Does NordVPN save user logs?
No. NordVPN is officially registered in Panama. It’s not Silicon Valley, but it has many advantages.First of all, Panama is outside the prying eyes of the 14-Eyes Alliance. This is very important for privacy. A VPN located within a 14-Eyes country is exposed to a massive spy network. It collects all kinds of sensitive user data and shares it with the other countries. This is not the case with NordVPN. It’s a great start.
