If someone is poisoned by alcohol, they may need immediate resuscitation. In a medical setting, healthcare professionals will use:

  • IV fluids: The provider gives intravenous (IV) fluids to treat dehydration. The fluids can also raise blood sugar levels.
  • Oxygen: The provider can provide oxygen using a nasal catheter. They may insert a small tube into the windpipe if the person has difficulty breathing.
  • Gastric pump: A health care provider can flush toxins in the stomach using a tube.
  • Blood filtration: If the kidneys are unable to function. The provider may begin dialysis to filter alcohol from the blood.

  • Avoid drinking games: Games can pressure participants into drinking.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink water after any alcoholic beverage.
  • Do not mix alcohol with medications: Do not drink alcohol while taking prescription medication.
  • Eat first: Do not drink on an empty stomach.

If your friend seems to be drinking too much, try to intervene and limit the amount they have. Moderation is always important.
